The renovation project to restore an iconic structure at the Llywernog silver-lead mine museum at Ponterwyd has been completed. The building which is set away from the main part of the museum once housed the gunpowder used to blast open the mines of northern Ceredigion in search of wealth.
These images show the building before and after its renovation.
The Victorian Gunpowder Magazine at the Llywernog Mine is circular in construction with a stone corbelled roof. It is thought to be the only example of this cornish style magazine left in Wales but the structure had deteriorated due to weathering.
The building is listed due to its special architectural and historic interest and as a result Cadw have part funded the renovation work.
The building had deteriorated due to weathering and required partial reconstruction, using traditional techniques and materials.
