Ysbyty Ystwyth historical mural

The history of the three areas of Ysbyty Ystwyth, New Row and Pontrhydygroes was bought to life by creation of 22 murals that depict local historical events that have shaped the development of the area.

Approximately 90 people, adults and children were involved with each mural being created by a group from the area for instance the school children, the Communities First forum, the Mother and toddler group, the community council and members from the local church and chapels. The project has provided an attractive and interesting account of life in the Uplands through the ages and has enlivened and instilled a sense of belonging within the community.

The project was facilitated by Pod Clare, a community artist who initially had to undertake the research with the assistance of Michael Freeman at Ceredigion Museum.

The murals illustrate diverse local topics including images of the mining industry, the history of the Hafod along with other local events and places. In conjunction with the murals, the drawings have also been used to create a colouring book for the children containing historical information about each mural.
